About Our Bikes
When we started the shop, there was never any question about what material to make our bikes out of. It had to be steel.
Steel is still the quintessential frame material. It has more development behind it than any other material. No other material can ever catch up, because steel has about a 4000 year headstart. The very first bikes that we would recognize as bikes were steel. They tried iron, but it was too brittle, despite being appealingly castable. We knew the bikes had to be steel because steel is repairable. It can be ridden when damaged. It’s a beautiful frame material. Even tig welded steel frames have a certain industrial beauty to them. The mitering and welding must be pretty precise to not have nasty gaps. Our favorite though, is lugged steel.
We offer tig welded and lugged steel bikes, with very few exceptions. We might buy your old aluminum bike though, if it has cool parts on it.
Our bikes basically fit into two categories: New and Reimagined.
Our new bikes are rarely off the peg, unless the build kit is pretty much perfect we prefer to custom build the bike. We offer bikes and frames for custom builds from Rivendell Bicycle Works, Brooklyn Bicycle Co, New Albion, Soma, All City, and Surly.
Our reimagined bikes are old mountain bikes turned into townies or tourers, old road bikes converted to 650b and make more practical with the addition of key braze ons like fender mounts and rack mounts, or old cruiser lightened and turned into basic city bikes. If it’s repurposed, it’s been throughly checked, completely disassembled, rebuilt by an expert mechanic and features a 2 year warranty on everything that’s not wearable. So you can buy it with confidence.
