About Our Coffee
At Gravel & Grind, you’ll find a pour over bar with daily single origin coffee offerings, a classic espresso bar and locally sourced high quality teas. We have a simple and seasonal food menu with toast from Stone Hearth Bakery down the street and fruit and veg for the waffles and toast from the farmers market near the bakery. We use Vermont Maple Syrup on the waffles, the syrup often coming from James’s sugar maple patch. The only butter you’ll see us rocking is grass fed. Artisan is an overused buzz word, which is too bad, because even as the word is borrowed for things that clearly are not artisan, it’s the best word to describe the way we do things. Slowly, one at a time, an emphasis on quality not speed. The fastest coffee you can get at our shop takes 3 minutes to make.
We source our house coffee beans from ChocoSombra, a direct trade Frederick coffee roaster.
You can buy our coffee by the 12 oz bag. It’s batch roasted in small quantities, and the roast we use is proprietary to us. It’s all Native Shade Grown Peruvian Single Estate Coffee, which is a mouthful, but it’s also worth noting. Our coffee is always on the menu, with at least two other single origin coffees from like minded craft roasters like ReAnimator in Philly, Ceremony in Annapolis, and Blanchard’s in Richmond. When you see the words single origin think single chateau wine: single origin coffees are all about unique flavors that can only occur in a specific growing region of the world. The tasting notes for a low altitude Central American coffee are drastically different than a high altitude South American coffee, and that’s part of the fun of a single origin coffee.
Our food menu is simple but here it is in a nutshell:
- Huge amazing Biscotti from Enrico Biscotti Co in Pittsburgh. Great flavor combos from normal vanilla to anise and seed combos
- Mamoul, a small pastry with it’s origins in the Middle East. Filled with nuts or dates
- Big ole coconut macaroons from Enrico’s
- Rotating selection of artisan toast: think open faced sandwich with fat slabs of jam or cheese or house made hummus
- Oversized Belgian Waffles, Saturday and Sunday only, until about 2pm
