Our Story
The story of Gravel & Grind began in 2014 as a dream and a hope. It embodied a wish for lives to be filled with adventure, community, long rambling bike rides over the lush rolling farmlands of Frederick and beyond. Soul stirring conversations with friends new and old, seated around tables topped with delicious food and exceptional coffee. From 2015 to 2018 that dream was fulfilled beyond our wildest imaginations. Things happen, life happens, and in 2018 the shop closed its doors and its owners headed north for other adventures.
It didn’t take long for the feeling that Frederick was home to sink in. Gravel & Grind, and all that it had grown to be, called Tracy back. Together with a new business partner Matt (old Gravel & Grind loyalist), Gravel & Grind began looking for a new location to reconvene. And so, the journey continues: consciously sourced coffee; delicious food prepared with love and care; sensible, solid bikes; and four walls created with thought and intention. G&G hopes you join again on this adventure!
The Coffee
Remember the great Gravel & Grind single origin beans from Frederick’s own ChocoSombra, direct trade roaster, that were dialed in to create the unique profiles? The shop has been working to bring you that distinctive Gravel & Grind coffee along with other specialty guest roasters. Whether you prefer a classic double espresso or the slightly sweet hit of a one of the unique lattes, the coffee won’t disappoint. All of our syrups are made from scratch in house (no mass-produced stuff). Life is short, so drink the good stuff!
The Bikes
Bikes can take you great places where you can then do fantastic things. Every ride can be an adventure, even if it’s right out your back door. You know the phrase “Why fix something that isn’t broken?” Many of the bikes of G&G’s past will also be part of the future on E 6th Street. G&G believes that simple, durable bikes that aren’t fickle make sense for town rides and long adventures. The shop is in the process of procuring those quality bikes and all the accoutrements that G&G folks have grown to love. The current environment in the bike industry will require patience and perseverance, and Gravel and Grind is dedicated to bringing you the best bikes for sale and rent as conditions permit. We currently have a slew of beautiful, classic Brooklyn Bikes, Surly, All-City, Salsa, Wilde, and Velo Orange gravel bikes in stock for rent and for sale. Check back here, Instagram, or sign up for our newsletter for updates.
The Space
The Gravel & Grind 2.0 is housed in an iconic 1940s car dealership building. But you won’t find remnants of the old automobiles here. What you will find is a well-designed space that enhances the natural elements of historic Frederick. The polished concrete floors, exposed steel I-beams, classic angled window that spans the entirety of the East 6th Street façade, a live edge cherry bar, and the talent of so many local artisans will beg you to sit a while and take in the coffee, the people, and the streetscape. We added plenty of outdoor seating with a wraparound patio with a fenced in rear area. And all of this in the heart of beloved downtown historic Frederick with a casually polished but funky vibe, with ample amounts of free parking (for bikes and cars).
Thanks to those of you that have kept with G&G, whether is by posting pictures with your G&G camp mug out on a coffee ride or simply sharing a memory of the former shop. You have helped keep the G&G memories alive along with making new ones. Tracy, Matt, and the G&G team are looking forward to meeting many others of you for the first time. Gravel and Grind is a place where all are welcome! We’re so glad you are here. Stay tuned friends….
